Association Projects

I was sent a call to participate in a new project by the artist group, Association Projects. They sent me a sound sample and asked for a response. My response was to transpose the sound sample into the key of C and create an accompanying melody with this music box. It was fun. Responses from various artists were displayed in Castlefield Gallery in Machester. Check out the project blog for further details.

Haunted Pictures Project

Three anthropologist-artists are working to create Haunted Pictures, an installation that combines photography, sketch and sound to explore social memory through stories of ghosts.
A portrait with speakers imbedded in its frame will tell a story of the building that is based on informants’ stories of ghosts rumoured to inhabit its walls. A portrait hangs on a wall. As visitors pass by, a slight something, perhaps best described as a sound, just catches the ear. Looking into the portrait, a subtle mingling of photography and sketch, one begins to recognise that the portrait is an interpretation of the space he or she is standing. The layers of sounds and thread-like tales woven through the imagery unravel before the viewer…As the visitor contemplates who this person may have been, other sounds seem to emanate from another time and place. Imagination or echo, the visitor senses that perhaps she is not as alone as originally thought…

Thank you to everyone who kindly gave their time and shared their stories and ideas during a very beautiful and productive research/residency period at A Piece of Cosmos in Kihoku. Thank you also to A Piece of Cosmos and Kazumi Nishida for making it all possible! It was truly a moving experience to have had the chance to meet and work with such talented people.
